Summer and early fall are the best times to go whale watching in Nova Scotia. To find a tour operator, visit our Whale Watching page. Nova Scotia has up to 12 species of whales that visit our waters every year!
A tidal bore is a tidal phenomenon in which the leading edge of the incoming tide forms a standing wave of water that travels upstream, against the current of a river or narrow bay. One of the only places in the world where this spectacle occurs is in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, thanks to the Bay of Fundy. As the tide begins to rush in, the extraordinary volume of water in the bay surges into the Minas Basin and Cobequid Bay and into all streams and rivers that feed into them.
In the Shubenacadie River, as the riverbanks narrow from the Cobequid Bay, the surge of water causes the dramatic reverse of the river’s outflowing water in a spectacular visible standing wave that often can reach up to 1 metre (3 feet) in height! As the turbulent, churning water races upstream at speeds close to 15 km per hour (10 mph), it generates rapids in its wake that average between 3 and 3.5 meters (10-12 ft) high – and can reach as high as 6 meters (20 feet) during extreme tides! Theses rapids are short lived which is why tidal bore rafting boat tour is a must when in Nova Scotia.
Tidal Bore Rafting operators will be your tour guide on this exciting rollercoaster ride in Zodiac boats. Each operator can provide you with a schedule of the dates and tour times in which they can offer easy to extreme tide trips based on the moon and how it will affect the tide.
Yes, Nova Scotia has a long and rich tradition of growing grapes for wine that dates back to the 1600s, when this was one of the first areas to cultivate grapes in North America. The climate and soil conditions in Nova Scotia favour unique and distinctive grape varietals and hybrids such as L’Acadie, Lucie Kuhlmann, New York Muscat, Baco Noir, Marquette, and Seyval Blanc, amongst others.
Nova Scotia is home to 20 wineries. Be sure to sample Nova Scotia’s first appellation wine, Tidal Bay, when you visit our many award-winning vineyards and wineries.
The site of the highest tidal range in the world can be found at Burntcoat Head Park, located on Nova Scotia’s Noel Shore. At low tide you can walk on the ocean floor alongside towering red cliffs and explore tidal pools. Pay attention to the tide schedule and the water and leave enough time to safely depart the ocean floor before the tide comes in. Plan to stay and watch as the tide comes in from the grassy areas as you will be amazed at the speed of the returning tide and height of the water where just hours before you were walking on the ocean floor.
This phenomenon happens twice a day, every day, thanks to the amazing Bay of Fundy!
