A tidal bore is a tidal phenomenon in which the leading edge of the incoming tide forms a standing wave of water that travels upstream, against the current of a river or narrow bay. One of the only places in the world where this spectacle occurs is in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, thanks to the Bay of Fundy. As the tide begins to rush in, the extraordinary volume of water in the bay surges into the Minas Basin and Cobequid Bay and into all streams and rivers that feed into them.

In the Shubenacadie River, as the riverbanks narrow from the Cobequid Bay, the surge of water causes the dramatic reverse of the river’s outflowing water in a spectacular visible standing wave that often can reach up to 1 metre (3 feet) in height! As the turbulent, churning water races upstream at speeds close to 15 km per hour (10 mph), it generates rapids in its wake that average between 3 and 3.5 meters (10-12 ft) high – and can reach as high as 6 meters (20 feet) during extreme tides!
