Tucked along the Northumberland Shore, New Glasgow makes for an easy, central hub for exploring this part of the province. It’s small enough to feel relaxed, but well-placed so you can head out in any direction for beaches, small towns, coastal drives, and adventures, then circle back in the evening for a good meal and a slower pace.

Just a short drive from New Glasgow, the Northumberland Shore is basically one long stretch of warm-water beach after another. This is one of the best spots in the province if you like swimming and strolling wide sand flats at low tide. You’ve got plenty to choose from, check out Melmerby Beach, Rushtons Beach, Waterside Beach, Pomquet Beach, Heather Beach, Caribou-Munroes Island, Blue Sea Beach, Bayfield Beach, Northport Beach Provincial Parks. Whether you’re swimming, picnicking, or just wandering the shoreline, this is one of the most accessible and swim-friendly beach regions in Nova Scotia.

In Pictou, you’ll find a mix of waterfront history, culture, and small-town charm just a short drive from New Glasgow. Start at the Hector Heritage Quay to step aboard a replica of the Ship Hector and learn about the town’s Scottish roots, then stretch your legs along the Jitney Trail for easy harbour views. Out on the water, Discover the Strait Boat Tours or Nova Scotia Family Fun Boat Tours offer scenic trips along the coast. Back in town, Truro’s downtown is full of local shops, cafés, and casual restaurants that make it easy to grab a great lunch or browse for something unique.
