- South Shore
Visit the charming and historic town of Shelburne on Nova Scotia’s South Shore for three days of seaside exploration.
1 Day 1: Historic Waterfront, Arts & Local Flavours
Start your Shelburne getaway by settling into your accommodations. There are a variety of charming places to stay in the Shelburne area, from historic waterfront inns to cozy cottages just outside of town.
Choose the charming Albert’s Inn, located on the waterfront and offering stunning harbour views, or stay at The Cooper’s Inn, a historic bed and breakfast built in 1874. For a quiet retreat, Boulder Cove Cottages and Roseway River Cottages offer peaceful, nature-filled settings.
Just 30 minutes outside of town, ocean lovers can opt for Seaside Serenity Cottage and its beautiful coastal views. Seaside Cottages at Ginger Hill are located directly on Crescent Beach in nearby Lockeport. Enhance your stay there by booking the Cozy Beachfront Lobster Getaway or the Beachfront Stay & Clam Digging.
Once you’re settled, head to Shelburne’s historic waterfront and explore by foot. Stroll along the streets, browse vibrant shops, and discover local creativity at Dirt to Dishes Pottery and Studio 135, where you can meet artists and find nature-inspired works.
In the evening, dine on fresh, local flavours at The Emerald Light Kitchen & Bar or Charlotte Lane, where inventive dishes and welcoming hospitality give you a delicious taste of Shelburne. Then, see what’s on for live performing arts, music, and films at The Osprey Arts Centre.
2 Day 2: Beaches, Trails & Tasting Experiences
Begin day two on the coast. Make your way to Sandy Point Lighthouse, one of Shelburne’s most popular and photo-friendly spots. At low tide, the sand bar around the lighthouse is exposed, inviting you to walk, relax, and enjoy the panoramic views.
Then, continue your beach time at Roseway Beach, ideal for long shoreline walks, birdwatching, and beachcombing. Take a short drive and head to Crescent Beach in nearby Lockeport, known for its soft white sand and turquoise water.
In the afternoon, explore the Tom Tigney & Foot Bridge Walking Trails. These scenic routes follow the Sable River, with boardwalks, river views, and interpretive panels that share local stories and history. Don’t miss the murals by local painter and historian Bessie Robart, which bring the area’s railroad past to life.
After your walk, reward yourself with local flavours. Back in Shelburne, visit Boxing Rock Brewing Company for their Tasting Room Experience, where you can sample six unique beers, learn about brewing, and enjoy a charcuterie pairing. You can also stop by District 33 Winery, overlooking the ocean just outside town, for small-batch tastings and beautiful views.
Wrap up your day with a relaxed, hearty dinner and classic pub favourites at The Ship’s Galley Pub & Eatery.
3 Day 3: Black Loyalist Heritage & Time to Slow Down
Travel to nearby Birchtown to visit the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre, located at the site of what was once the largest free Black community in British North America in the 18th century. Explore the exhibits, then walk the 1.5 kilometre Black Loyalist Heritage Trail to see St. Paul’s Church, the Old School House Museum, and the National Historic Monument of Canada overlooking Birchtown Bay.
For a memorable experience, take part in the Taste of Birchtown experience, which pairs a guided tour of the Heritage Centre with a delicious charcuterie and craft beer tasting at Boxing Rock Brewing Company, bringing together history, food, and community stories.
Wrap up your three days in Shelburne with a light meal or a cozy mid-day break at The Beandock Coffee & Collectibles, where you can enjoy fresh-baked treats, comforting soups and sandwiches, and a good cup of coffee.
