October is a special time of year in Nova Scotia. From the colourful changing leaves to the bountiful harvests, it’s the perfect time to get out and explore as sweater weather sets in.
Fall brings about the fruits and vegetables of a summer’s worth of labour. Visit a local farm market or farmers’ market or venture to a neighbouring town to pick up fresh ingredients for a hearty dinner, comforting soup or perfect pie. Be sure to find out where you can also visit an apple or pumpkin u-pick to hand select your very own.
This seaside city is bustling all year, but fall is perfect for strolling the waterfront and city streets with a coffee in hand, getting in some retail therapy ranging from boutiques to popular clothing shops, and dining on anything you crave. Extend your time in the city by making it an overnight trip.
Visit during Nocturne: Art at Night, an outdoor art festival held each October to experience dozens of interactive displays of visual art along the streets of Halifax and Dartmouth.
Nova Scotia offers some of the best leaf watching in North America. While you don’t have to venture far to capture some colourful fall scenes, to be truly taken by the colours, head to Cape Breton. The already incredible highlands lay out like a colourful quilt from viewpoints high above along the winding Cabot Trail. Hike one of the 26 trails available in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and don’t forget your camera!
Other notable hikes for leaf peeping include: trails at Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, Rum Runners Trail, Point Pleasant Park, Victoria Park, Le Petit Bois Trails, and Harvest Moon Trailway.
Head out of your usual surroundings for a getaway in a quaint NS town. Check out Annapolis Royal, Wolfville, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Yarmouth, or Tatamagouche for shopping, dining, and comfy overnight accommodations.
Fall is the perfect time to stop into a Nova Scotian winery, brewery, cidery or distillery along the Good Cheer Trail. Sample locally crafted beverages, enjoy a drink on a patio, pick out your favourites to take home and enjoy later or gift to friends and family, and find out about what goes into making your favourite Nova Scotia drink.
Nova Scotia is brimming with incredible places to dine. Whether it is something new or an old favourite, let someone else do the cooking! Many restaurants also have takeout options available; turn your takeout into a picnic by bringing your meal on a hike or eat in a local park and enjoy the fall colours.
