9 Don’t Miss Outdoor Adventures in Cape Breton
For the outdoor enthusiast, Cape Breton Island is a must-visit spot when in Nova Scotia.
Known as one of Nova Scotia’s most popular hiking trails, the much-loved Skyline Trail has seen increased visitation in recent years due to its easy, accessible trailway, Instagram-able sweeping coastal views and unforgettable sunsets. With more visitors wishing to experience the Skyline Trail, congestion has become a safety issue – both on the hiking trail and its parking lot to creating traffic backups on the Cabot Trail, which has resulted in trail and parking lot closures to maintain a safe hiking experience for all.
If you are planning to visit the Skyline Trail during the peak summer and fall seasons, a parking reservation will be required. This reservation system will allow for a better and safer experience for trail visitors while ensuring the protection of fragile ecosystems located along the trail.
Begining on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 9:00 am AST / 8:00 am EST, the Parks Canada Reservation system will officially open for Skyline Trail parking reservation bookings. Each reservation requires guests to select a specific date and to choose an available time slot on that day. Each day offers up to six, 4-hour periods to choose from. Visitors will also be asked to indicate the type of parking space required from choices such as standard, accessible, oversized vehicle, or extra-large oversized vehicle.
All visitors arriving at the Skyline Trail between June 26 – October 25 will be required to have a Parks Canada parking reservation to access the trail.
Parks Canada staff will be available at the trail entry/kiosk area from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, daily to assist trail visitors. Visitors must stop at the Skyline Trail entry kiosk before entering the trail.
Beginning May 6, 2026, visit the Parks Canada Reservations website and select “Day Use” and select “Parking (Skyline Trail)” to begin your Skyline Trail parking reservation.
