1 Day 1: Amherst to Tatamagouche
Pugwash
Continue a half hour to Pugwash, a charming seaside village known for warm waters and its peaceful harbour. Choose to learn about local history at Thinker’s Lodge, explore the natural beauty on the Pugwash Estuary Trail, or tee off at Northumberland Links or Fox Harb’r Resort, both offering scenic coastal golf experiences.
For lunch, continue to Malagash and relax on the patio at Jost Vineyards, or enjoy fresh seafood and waterfront views at Wiley’s by the Wharf.
Visit Tatamagouche
Your final stop of the day is Tatamagouche, a 45-minute drive from Pugwash. A vibrant village known for its art scene, local shops, and a scenic waterfront, choose to browse boutiques and galleries around the main street and Creamery Square, cycle a section of the Trans Canada Trail, or enjoy a pint at Tatamagouche Brewing Company.
This evening, settle in for the night in a local inn, or opt for a unique stay like the Train Station Inn, where railway cars have been transformed into accommodations.
2 Day 2: New Glasgow & Pictou
Make your way to Pictou
This morning, make your way toward Pictou, taking time on the roughly 45-minute drive to explore some of the Sunrise Trail’s hidden gems. Choose to visit the Lismore Sheep Farm, where you can meet the sheep and shop for locally made wool products, or stop at Seafoam Lavender Farm to stroll the bright purple fields and browse for lavender-inspired gifts.
Explore Pictou
Pictou is known as the birthplace of New Scotland and one of Nova Scotia’s most historic waterfront towns. Here, dive into the region’s Scottish heritage at Hector Heritage Quay, get out on the water on a boat tour, or spend some time discovering local artisan shops. Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at Harbour House Ales & Spirits, or Marina Bar & Grill.
New Glasgow
Make your way 20-minutes southwest to New Glasgow, the hub of the Northumberland Shore. Known for multi-use trails with a scenic backdrop of the river, museums and parks, this vibrant town offers plenty to explore. Spend some time exploring the scenic riverfront, local parks, and vibrant downtown. Discover the region’s industrial past at the Museum of Industry, take a walk or bike ride along the Samson Trail, or venture to nearby to enjoy one of Nova Scotia’s most popular warm-water beaches.
This evening, savour dinner at a local favourite such as the Shoebox Cantina or East Avenue Dining before settling in for the night at a nearby inn or hotel.
3 Day 3: Seaside Adventures & Antigonish
Explore the Coast
Today, make your way to Antigonish, your final stop along the Sunrise Trail. If you’re craving a beach day, stop at Melmerby Beach, just a 20-minute drive from your starting point of New Glasgow. Along this 1.5 hour seaside route, discover Arisaig and Cape George, where rugged coastline and spectacular ocean views await. Choose to explore trails and fossil-rich shoreline at Arisaig Provincial Park or take the scenic drive to Cape George Point Lighthouse for panoramic views across the Northumberland Strait toward Cape Breton. If you’re eager to start exploring Antigonish, you can also take a more direct inland route, and arrive in about 40 minutes.
Visit Antigonish
Conclude your Sunrise Trail adventure in Antigonish, known as the Highland Heart of Nova Scotia. This vibrant town blends Scottish heritage with a lively arts and culture scene. Spend time exploring the walkable downtown, browsing local shops, or taking in the scenery at nearby Pomquet Beach Provincial Park.
