MacPhee House was originally built around 1875 by local teacher John Hogan. In 1900 Florence and John MacPhee had bought the house and by 1911 had added on to the original house. They established a boarding house and Inn for travellers while also raising 8 children. The family ran the Inn until 1985. At times the building was also home to a post office and general store. After being moved to the West River Falls the house became a Tourist Bureau and Community Museum.
The museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts and genealogy from the area which will intrigue and amuse visitors of all ages. Check out the ship models, mill and military displays and relax in our parlour. Local volunteers and staff are waiting to show you the house. tell you stories of what it was like to live in the village and of Hurricane Beth that destroyed the mill that once stood there. Come visit our museum. enjoy your picnic lunch on the grounds, and wander on the boardwalk along the falls to the footbridge that will lead you to the trails and the Artist Park.
The VIC is located in the kitchen area of the museum, where we provide visitors with information on the area’s attractions. lodging, maps and whatever you may need to help you enjoy our area.
The Museum overlooks the beautiful West River waterfalls and includes access to a boardwalk and trails, including a walking bridge over the falls.
