Based on Stephen King’s psychological thriller novel of the same name, picture perfect Lunenburg was transformed into a small New England town in this 1995 film that starred Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, John C. Reilly, and Christopher Plummer.

This Academy Award-nominated 2019 film starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson was filmed on the park grounds of Cape Forchu Lighthouse near Yarmouth. A second lighthouse was built as part of the set which was dismantled following the completion of filming.

The Scarlet Letter | Official Trailer
Filmed in Yarmouth and Shelburne along with sites in British Columbia, this 1995 movie staring Demi Moore, Gary Oldman and Robert Duvall took place along Dock Street and throughout the waterfront area where today you can still see elements built for the film as well as the historic buildings in the town that provided the perfect backdrop for this production.

Film Facts:

  • Filmed in Nova Scotia in 1913, Evangeline is believed to be the earliest recorded film in Canadian history!
  • Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s popular poem, Evangeline, A Tale Of Acadie, was published in 1847 and is about lost love during the expulsion of the Acadians – Le Grand Dérangement – which took place in Nova Scotia between 1755-1762.

Today, visit the Grand-Pré National Historic Site to learn about the Acadians, the expulsion, and explore the grounds to see the statue of Evangeline.

Film Fact: The HMCS Sackville was featured in the 2020 movie, Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks, Elisabeth Shue and Stephen Graham.

Through the use of technology, the exterior of the Sackville was scanned and used to bring the ship to life on the ocean once again for use in the movie that is based on the 1955 novel, The Good Shepherd, by C. S. Forester.

As the last remaining Flower Class corvette naval vessel in existence, The HMCS Sackville can be toured at its summer berth along the Halifax Waterfront in July and August and throughout the year at HMC Dockyard (by appointment).

Film Fact: A 70-foot tall lighthouse was built on the grounds of the Cape Forchu Lighthouse for the filming of the 2019 Academy Award-nominated movie, The Lighthouse that starred Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
