A tidal bore is a tidal phenomenon in which the leading edge of the incoming tide forms a standing wave of water that travels upstream, against the current of a river or narrow bay. One of the places where this spectacle occurs is at the head of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. At high tide, the extraordinary volume of water in the bay floods into the Shubenacadie River and, as the riverbanks narrow, the compressing waters rise in a spectacular surge and a visible standing wave, sometimes 1 metre (3 feet) in height! As the turbulent, churning water races upstream at speeds close to 15 km per hour (10 mph) it generates rapids in its wake that are between 3 and 3.5 meters (10-12 ft) high. Tidal Bore Rafting operators will be your tour guide on this exciting ride in Zodiac boats. Each operator can provide you with a schedule of the dates in which they can offer easy to extreme trips based on the moon and how it will affect the tide.
Yes, Nova Scotia has a long and rich tradition of growing grapes for wine that dates back to the 1600s, when this was one of the first areas to cultivate grapes in North America. The climate and soil conditions in Nova Scotia favour unique and distinctive grape varietals like L’Acadie, Lucie Kuhlmann, Baco Noir and Seyval Blanc, amongst others. Nova Scotia is home to 19 wineries. Be sure to sample Nova Scotia’s first appellation wine called Tidal Bay.
The highest tides in the world can be found at Burntcoat Head Park on the Noel Shore of Nova Scotia. At low tide you can walk the ocean floor, enjoy the towering red cliffs and explore tidal pools. Pay attention to the tide schedule and leave enough time to head up from the ocean floor before the tide rises too high. You will be amazed at the height of the water when the tide comes in!
