Overview

Memory Lane Heritage Village, located less than 1 hour from Halifax on Nova Scotia’s scenic Eastern Shore, is an award-winning living history village depicting life in rural Nova Scotia during the 1940s.

Stroll back in time to when pink fridges and green washing machines were the height of modern convenience. Feel the cool, damp sawdust in the Icehouse and explore the tools and machinery. Cuddle a kitten or take a ride in our bright red 1948 International Pick-up and immerse yourself in this era of transition, when oil lamps faded away to bare light bulbs, and the Second World War changed rural life forever.

Eighteen historic buildings await your visit with no ropes or barriers between you and the past. Rural industries such as gold mining, forestry, fishing and boat building are represented.

Antique vehicles include a 1928 Model A, a 1948 International pickup, and a 1949 Farmall Cub Tractor.

Children will enjoy our riddle-based “Heritage Hunt”, as well as the kittens, lambs, and chicks that are free range around the grounds.

Authentic 1940s cookhouse meals are served daily, including fresh soup, and our famous baked beans and Cookhouse brown bread. Picnic take out lunches are also available.

All buildings on site are wheelchair accessible (with the exception of the 2nd floor of the Webber House), although some entrances are narrow and can have a small bump where the ramp meets the heritage building. Staff are happy to assist with this.

There are accessible and gender-neutral washrooms in the Hosking General Store as well as in the Cookhouse.

The Gift Shop features 1940s-related products, as well as local crafts. Visa, MasterCard and Debit are accepted.

Memory Lane Heritage Village is Nova Scotia’s first 100% Solar-Powered Museum and also features a Level II EV Charging Station that includes both a Standard J-1772 outlet, and a Tesla outlet.

The Eastern Shore Archives is located within the Heritage Village and welcomes research requests by appointment. Information about archival services, resources, and collections can be found at easternshorearchives.ca.
