Discover the historic shipping passageway at St. Peter’s Canal National Historic Site. This famous canal with its tidal lock system specially designed to link the Atlantic Ocean with the Bras d’Or Lakes, has served as a busy gateway since opening in 1869.

The Cape Breton Fossil Centre in Sydney Mines is one of eight important fossil sites in Nova Scotia and home to a fossil forest that is known internationally for excellent examples of plant fossils. Guided tours of the fossil centre are offered daily; guided tours of the nearby fossil cliffs, where visitors can walk the beach and find fossils to be identified by the on-site geologist, are available twice per week.
