New for 2026: Skyline Trail Timed Parking Reservations

If the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park is on your must-do list for 2026, there’s an important update you’ll want to know about before you arrive at the trailhead.

Known as one of Nova Scotia’s most popular hiking trails, the much-loved Skyline Trail has seen increased visitation in recent years due to its easy, accessible trailway, Instagram-able sweeping coastal views and unforgettable sunsets. With more visitors wishing to experience the Skyline Trail, congestion has become a safety issue – both on the hiking trail and its parking lot to creating traffic backups on the Cabot Trail, which has resulted in trail and parking lot closures to maintain a safe hiking experience for all.

Beginning in May, Parks Canada will extend their parking reservation system to include the Skyline Trail.

If you are planning to visit the Skyline Trail during the peak summer and fall seasons, a parking reservation will be required. This reservation system will allow for a better and safer experience for trail visitors while ensuring the protection of fragile ecosystems located along the trail.

Before you Book: Helpful Tips

If you are planning to book on May 6, to visit the trail on a long weekend or holiday, or to hike in to experience one of the epic sunsets from the trail’s headland, here are some helpful tips to help make your booking experience quick and easy:

Tip #1 – Create your Parks Canada reservation system account
If you plan to book your Skyline Trail reservation(s) on the day the booking system opens, visit the Parks Canada Reservation System website to:

  • create your reservation account before May 6, or
  • log into your existing account to ensure your account is active.

Tip #2 – Know your preferred date(s) and time(s)
Knowing when you plan to visit the Skyline Trail will help make the booking experience a breeze!

Not sure when you will be able to visit?
While same-day reservations may be possible/available, due to the Skyline Trail’s popularity, advance booking prior to arrival is strongly recommended.

Good to Know: Parking

  • There are approximately 50 parking spaces, included two accessible parking spots, available for each of the six, 4-hour time slots.
  • Parking is available for both standard passenger vehicles as well as oversized vehicles.

Oversized Vehicles
Visitors driving oversized vehicles should reserve as early as possible as oversized spots are very limited and are unlikely to be available for same-day reservations.

  • Vehicles 20–31 feet in length: must book an oversized spot
  • Vehicles 32–45 feet in length: must request an extra-large oversized spot

Commercial vehicles and Group Tours
Commercial vehicles such as tour buses/motorcoaches carrying more than 12 passengers must contact Parks Canada directly at 902-224-2306 or cbinfo@pc.gc.ca.

Groups of 12-25 participants are strongly encouraged to hire a Parks Canada interpreter; groups with 26+ participants are required to hire a Parks Canada interpreter.

Late Bookings and Late Arrivals

Visitors can book a same-day trail reservation when there are available time slots appearing in the Parks Canada Reservation System.

Anyone arriving after the first hour of their booked time slot will be denied entry.

Accessibility

Skyline Trail Accessible Parking

There are two designated accessible parking spaces available for each of the six, 4-hour time slots.

Visitors who require an accessible parking spot should select the “Parking – Accessible” option during the reservation process and must present a valid government-issued accessibility permit upon check-in at the trail kiosk and government‑issued accessible parking permits must be clearly displayed in vehicles, as required in Nova Scotia.

Skyline Trail Accessibility

Please note that the Skyline Trail is not fully accessible. While some visitors using mobility aids may find the initial trail sections manageable, the boardwalk section at the end includes stairs and does not have ramped access which may make this section inaccessible for many visitors using a mobility‑device.

Parks Canada offers the use of a trail chair which is located at the visitor centre at the National Park’s Chéticamp entrance.

Did you know that you can make reservations at each of the Parks Canada reservation kiosks located within the Cape Breton Highlands National Park?

Operating mid-June to early September from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, you can reserve campsites within the National Park campgrounds (subject to availability) and book your parking reservation for the Skyline Trail.

Visit a Parks Canada reservation kiosk in the following Cape Breton Highlands National Park locations:

While most trails in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park allow leashed dogs to accompany their companions, the Skyline Trail does not permit dogs on the trail. This is to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors, pets, area wildlife, and to protect the fragile coastal and headland ecosystems along the trail.

Please plan ahead – do not leave pets unattended in vehicles, particularly during warm weather and be sure to clean up after your pet and dispose of waste appropriately.

A same day or late booking is a reservation made on the same day in which you plan to hike the Skyline Trail.

Available time slots for each of the six, 4-hour blocks of time will remain available to be booked up until 30 minutes after the start time of the specific time block has begun.

Same day / late booking reservations to hike the Skyline Trail should only be made if you are able to safely arrive at the Skyline Trail parking lot by the end of the first hour of your booked 4-hour time block.

Please note that same day and late bookings are subject to availability.

There are no refunds for missed reservations.

Absolutely! Here’s an example of what a same day / late booking could look like:

You have just entered the Park and paid the entrance fee on the Cheticamp side of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and, while stopped at the Visitor Centre, have logged into the Parks Canada Reservation System on your smartphone and you see that there is availability for the 9:00 am parking reservation time block for today to park and hike the Skyline Trail.

It is currently 9:20 am and you are approximately a 15-minute drive away from the Skyline Trail parking lot. You would have 10 minutes – until 9:30 am – to book an available 9:00 am parking reservation time slot – either booking it securely online or by calling the toll-free booking phone number – before the time slot can no longer be booked.

Booking this time slot would then mean that you would need to arrive at the Skyline Trail parking lot by 10:00 am. Arriving after 10:00 am would mean that you have missed your chance to hike the Skyline Trail, that you would not be permitted to enter the parking lot, and you would not be eligible to receive a refund of your parking fee.

A cancellation fee applies in the event you need to:

  • change your parking reservation, or
  • cancel your Skyline Trail parking reservation.

Cancelled parking reservations will reappear as available time slots that can be booked.

Depending on how you cancel your Skyline Trail parking reservation will determine the applicable cancellation fee.

  • If you cancel online: $3.50 cancellation fee
  • If you cancel by phone: $5.50 cancellation fee

Cancellation Policy

  • If a parking reservation is cancelled 3+ days (72+ hours) prior to the booked visit: Visitor pays cancellation fee from the reservation service fee and remainder of parking fee is refunded.
  • If a parking reservation is cancelled 1-3 days (0 to 72 hours) prior to the booked visit: Visitor pays cancellation fee from the reservation service fee and 50% of parking fee is refunded.
  • Cancel parking reservation day of booked visit: No refund.
