Gondola at Cape Smokey
Open year-round
Jump from ocean saltwater at Ingonish Beach to Freshwater Lake with just a few steps! This welcoming day use area is packed with family-friendly activities. After a refreshing swim, enjoy the playground, tennis courts, soccer field and picnic area.
A Mobi-Chair is available to reserve by phoning 902-224-2306 or emailing cbinfo@pc.gc.ca. A Mobi-Mat allows for access across the sand at Freshwater Lake.
All-gender washroom facilities are available.
Intense wave action and tidal patterns shift sand and cobblestone along the shore of Ingonish Beach throughout the spring and summer. Plan for both and be aware of strong currents while enjoying water activities. Lifeguards are on duty during July and August. Dogs are not permitted in the supervised area of the beach.
Kayak, SUP and Tube Rentals
Kayaks, paddleboards and inflatable tube rentals are available from May to September from Parks Canada partners, Live Life in Tents, located in the Ingonish Beach parking lot.
Freshwater Lake Trail and Freshwater Look-off Trail
Connect with nature on Freshwater Lake Trail, a 1.7km / 1.1 mile loop trail that is popular with walkers, hikers, and cyclists year-round and perfect for snowshoeing in the winter.
The nearby Freshwater Look-off Trail is short – but steep – which is a great way to stretch your legs when you are short on time. At just 0.3 km / 0.2 miles in length, you’ll be rewarded with a view at the top that includes Ingonish Beach, Freshwater Lake, Middle Head and Cape Smokey.
Cape Breton Highlands National Park’s operating season is from mid-May to mid-October, with full services in July and August. The Cabot Trail is open year-round. A park pass is required for use of all services and facilities in the national park, including beaches. Revenues are used to maintain and improve park services.
