5 family friendly Fall activities to check out in Nova Scotia

When the summer heat gives way to crisp, refreshing days and the scenery turns from greens to golds and vibrant reds, a season of even more things to do in Nova Scotia begins. While swimming in our warm ocean and lake beaches may be over for another year, there are endless opportunities to get outside and explore all the incredible family-friendly activities fall brings.

Here are our top five family-friendly things to do in Nova Scotia this fall!

U-picks

Nova Scotia is well known for the numerous varieties of apples that are grown here, which also means that there is an abundance of u-picks available through the summer and fall months–from apples and pears to pumpkins and squash. You may even be treated to a wagon ride to and from the orchard! Some farms may also offer root vegetable u-digs!

Corn & Hay Bale Mazes

Test your navigation skills as you take on one of the many corn mazes that pop up each autumn throughout Nova Scotia.

Popular corn mazes include Noggins Corner Farm Market near Wolfville, Riverbreeze Corn Maze near Truro, The Windsor Corn Maze near Windsor, Indian Garden Farms near Bridgewater, Stirling Fruit Farms near Wolfville, Morse’s Farm in Berwick, Willowbank U-pick in Port Williams, Hank’s Farm Market in North Sydney, and Six Little Farmers Corn Maze in Mabou. How about a hay bale maze? Weave your way through the hay bales at Blake’s Pumpkin Jungle in Debert.

For the braver souls, haunted corn mazes, such as Riverbreeze Fear Farm, can also be found in Nova Scotia… if you dare!

Fall Leaf Watching

There are plenty of ways to take in Nova Scotia’s spectacular fall colours. You could pack a picnic and hop in the car, hike or cycle stunning coastal trailsgo hiking or hit the trail on your bikes, or even book a tour aboard a hot air balloon, helicopter or plane for a bird’s eye view!

Fall colour festivities are taking place around the province. In the Wentworth Valley, you can take a ride on the ski lift to the top of Ski Wentworth to see the changing leaf colours. Head to Ingonish to check out Eastern Canada’s first gondola as you ride up to the top of Cape Smokey which overlooks the Cape Breton Highlands, Cabot Trail and the northern Cape Breton coastline.

Farm and Farmers’ Markets

With all the u-picks, wineries and farms all across the province, it should come as no surprise that Nova Scotia has the most farmers’ markets per capita in Canada.

Along with fresh, seasonal produce, you’ll be treated to artists and artisans selling their handcrafted wares, freshly baked goods, local cheeses, meats, jams, jellies, preserves, and so much more at each and every farm market and farmers’ market you visit throughout the province.
