DESCRIPTION:Ta’n me’j Tel-keknuo’ltiek (Da’n mej Del-geg-new-ol-tee-egg): How Unique We Still Are\n \nMi’kmaw people past and present are shaped by their deep and abiding relations to the place they sprouted from. The Mi’kmaq continue to sprout from this land\, to be nourished by these waters\, to defend their inherent rights\, and to respect treaty relationships with others in this place. \nFirst launched in November 2021 at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic\, Ta’n me’j Tel’keknuo’ltiek: How Unique We Still Are\, reflects how Mi’kmaw people remain connected to the lands and waters of Mi’kma’ki. This exhibit featuring Mi’kmaw historian and guest curator\, Salina Kemp\, offers a platform for Mi’kmaw people to express their continued experiences with an understanding of the lands and the waters of Mi’kma’ki. Mi’kmaw single-word concepts are represented through personal testimony and histories of individual Mi’kmaw people\, featured objects\, artifacts\, images and symbolic artwork. These experiences and understandings are rooted in cultural expressions that connect past\, present and future in this place. \nTa’n me’j Tel’keknuo’ltiek: How Unique We Still Are offers the visitor\, especially the non-Indigenous Canadian public\, opportunities for fundamental treaty education\, and to learn about the truths that must precede reconciliation. \nThis exhibit has been translated into Mi’kmaw using the Smith/Francis orthography. Throughout the translation process\, the French and English versions have been changed as necessary to more accurately capture Mi’kmaw perception of the concepts presented. \nVisit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic website for museum hours and admission rates.

DESCRIPTION:The annual Cape Breton Highlands 3 Peaks Challenge will take place Saturday\, June 13\, 2026. \nNow in it’s 16th year\, this popular hiking event welcomes hiking teams of four to register to hike three mountain trails in Cape Breton – all in one day! \n2026 3 Peaks Challenge will hike the following mountain trails: \n\nSquirrel Mountain in Grand Etang: 4.65 km in a steep\, steady climb\nRoberts Mountain in Pleasant Bay: 3.9 km return; good for all skill levels\nAcadian Mountain in Petit Etang near National Park entrance: 8.4 km loop\, moderate hike with steep inclines\n\nTeams will hike approximately 16-18 km along with elevations of approximately 3\,500 metres. \nOnly 24 teams will be allowed to participate in this popular hiking event. Team registration fee for this event is $200 and includes a long sleeve t-shirt and cooling towel per team member along with a Parks Canada Cape Breton Highlands National Park one-day park pass\, map\, and other items. \nVisit the 3 Peaks Challenge website for all up-to-date information and to register your team!

Joan will be joined by David Diviney\, Chief Curator of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia\, for this special event. \nIncluded with Gallery admission. Registration is encouraged as there are limited seats available. \n  \nAbout the Artist\nJoan Jonas (b. 1936\, New York\, NY) is a world-renowned artist whose work encompasses a wide range of media including video\, performance\, installation\, sound\, text\, and sculpture. Jonas’ experiments and productions in the late 1960s and early 1970s continue to be crucial to the development of many contemporary art genres\, from performance and video to conceptual art and theatre. Since 1968\, her practice has explored ways of seeing\, the rhythms of rituals\, and the authority of objects and gestures. \nJonas has exhibited and performed extensively around the world. Her notable exhibition history includes Documenta 5\, 6\, 7\, 8\, 11\, and 13; the 28th Sao Paolo Biennial; the 5th Kochi-Muziris Biennale; and the 13th Shanghai Biennale. She has recently presented solo exhibitions at the United States Pavilion for the 56th Edition of the Venice Biennial; Tate Modern\, London; Museu Serralves\, Porto; Pinacoteca de São Paulo; Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza\, Madrid; Dia Beacon; Haus der Kunst\, Munich; The Drawing Center\, New York\, Gladstone Gallery\, New York and Galerie Gisela Capitain\, Naples\, Italy. The Museum of\nModern Art in New York hosted a retrospective of Jonas’s work in 2024. \nJonas is the recipient of many awards including The Whitechapel Gallery Art Icon (2016); the Maya Deren Award given by the American Film Institute (1989); and the Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2009). In 2018\, Jonas was awarded the prestigious Kyoto Prize\, given to those individuals who have contributed significantly to the scientific\, cultural and spiritual betterment of mankind\, and in 2024 she was presented with the Nam June Paik Prize\, awarded to artists who have contributed to the development of contemporary art\, mutual understanding\, and world peace. In 2025\, Jonas was selected as a medalist in the inaugural Art Basel Awards and received their distinguished Icon Award.
