Overview

Johny’s Java is a laid-back café in central Amherst, serving homemade comfort food, fresh-baked treats, and specialty coffee in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Located in the beautifully restored former Scotsburn Dairy plant, the century-old brick building features exposed brick walls, rustic beams, and an industrial-inspired design that creates a cozy and inviting space to relax and connect.

A favourite gathering place for locals and visitors alike, Johny’s Java is known for food that truly tastes like home. The menu features hearty homemade soups such as seafood chowder, corn chowder, beef and barley, mulligatawny, and hamburger soup, along with creamy mac and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, wraps, and other comforting café favourites. Freshly baked cinnamon rolls, oatcakes, brownies, oversized cookies, and the café’s popular scones pair perfectly with a cappuccino, espresso, specialty coffee, or tea.

Owner Jean-Guy brings more than 20 years of culinary and hospitality experience to every dish. His Acadian heritage shines through in regular specials such as rappie pie and fricot, offering visitors an authentic taste of Nova Scotia’s rich culinary traditions. The café also showcases local art and artisan products and hosts paint-night workshops with local artist Ben Pitman, where guests can create and take home their own watercolour masterpiece.

Whether you’re stopping in for a hearty homemade meal, a fresh-baked treat, or a relaxing coffee break, Johny’s Java offers comfort, community, and a true taste of Maritime hospitality.
