Chapel Gully Trail
Open year-round
Come explore an area rich in history and culture that is nestled within the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq.
First used by the Mi’kmaq as a base for fishing and transportation, French and English settlements dotted these remote islands for over 300 years. In the 18th century, the English fort at Grassy Island was the site of a historic battle. Today, Canso Islands National Historic Site welcomes curious explorers upon its windswept shores to walk the ruins of this earthen fort and dive into the stories of this forgotten settlement.
Stop by the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Canso to learn all about Canso’s history and make use of our electric vehicle charging stations before heading out on your next journey. Hop on a fishing boat for a free ride over to Grassy Island and walk amongst the ruins of the old fort and fishing village. If you are interested in spending more time on the water than on the island, bring your own stand-up paddleboard, kayak, or canoe and check out the view of Grassy Island from the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean.
Visitors are advised to call ahead (902-366-3136) to confirm whether the ferry to Grassy Island is running. Delays or cancellations may be caused due to weather or personnel shortages.
