Stroll the wharf, then step aboard the last salt bank schooner to fish from the port of Lunenburg and imagine the working life of fishers from the past. Further along the waterfront learn about boatbuilding at the museum’s Big Boat Shed located at the former site of Smith & Rhuland, the shipyard that built Bluenose. Enjoy engaging and authentic interpretation that truly makes this museum a must see!

Overview

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic has three floors of exhibits that unveil the truths of a rich and diverse fishing history. Exposed is the stark contrast between the romance and beauty of the sea and the harshness of life hanging on a fishhook.

The Marine Life Gallery explores the wonders beneath the waves while highlighting the importance of ocean preservation. The First Fishers Exhibit, told from the Mi’kmaq perspective, showcases the beginning of the Nova Scotia fishery. The Grand Fisheries Gallery has displays of both inshore and offshore fisheries and also the spin-off industries they generated and supported.

On second floor is the Age of Sail Banks Fishery Gallery where the evolution of the colonial offshore fishery unfolds. You’ll also find the Stormy Seas Gallery, an exhibit focusing on hardships at sea and the camaraderie, strength and resilience of the fishers who work there.

On the Third floor, you will find our Bluenose Gallery. The museum has the largest collection of artifacts of the original Bluenose.

The real gem of this museum is the passionate, knowledgeable, and accessible Interpreters who bring stories of the fisheries to life. Whether chatting with a retired fisher, a fisher’s daughter, or a former fish plant worker, these invaluable life stories give a true glimpse into the world of fishing culture.

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is wheelchair accessible with an elevator, accessible washrooms and accessible parking spaces near the main entrance.
