The Audacity to Lead and the Ripple Effects of Resistance, Recognition and Legacy with Deanna Mohamed

This session examines the enduring legacy of African Nova Scotian activism and leadership in New Glasgow, highlighting how the principles of Sankofa (learning from the past to build the future) and Ujima (collective work and responsibility) continue to inspire and shape present-day initiatives, including the Viola’s Way Project.

Deanna Mohamed has worked in education for 23 years and currently serves as the Provincial Student Success and Retention Specialist with the Office of Black Student Success at Nova Scotia Community College. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Acadia University and a Master of Education in Africentric Leadership from Mount Saint Vincent University.

A passionate advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion, Deanna is a sought-after keynote speaker, emcee and workshop facilitator. She is the co-founder of the Black Student Services Professionals Division of the Atlantic Association of Colleges and Universities and the Archy Beals Legacy Awards, which has provided scholarships to African Nova Scotian students since 2022.

Her contributions to education and cultural heritage have been recognized with the inaugural King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2024 and Mount Saint Vincent University’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alumni Legacy Award in 2023.
