Nova Scotia’s connection to the ocean runs deep, but SailGP brings a whole new level of energy to that legacy.
After a record-breaking 12-minute sellout in 2024, the Canada Sail Grand Prix, also known as SailGP, returned to Halifax in June 2026 as one of the most anticipated events of the summer and again saw the 4 km long Halifax Waterfront boardwalk filled with thousands of SailGP racing fans taking in the high-speed action.
This isn’t traditional sailing. It’s high-speed, high-tech racing, with hydrofoiling F50 catamarans flying across the water at speeds approaching 100 km/h – just metres from shore. When that level of competition meets Halifax Harbour, it transforms the city into a natural amphitheatre – creating a world class race stauidum on water where this international sport unfolds against one of Canada’s most iconic coastal backdrops.
It’s a global spectacle that draws fans from around the world, and a powerful showcase of why Halifax is a premier destination for major events.
Planning to join in the action in Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 15-16, 2027? Read on to learn more about this exciting international racing event and how to experience it.
Situated between Georges Island, the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, and the shores of Downtown Halifax and Dartmouth, the race course places the action right in the heart of the city. The SailGP Race Stadium’s finish line sits near the Halifax waterfront – so expect dramatic, photo-finish moments just steps from shore.
There are a range of ways to take in the action:
SailGP brings together thirteen national teams of the world’s best sailing athletes. In Halifax, all eyes turn to the NorthStar SailGP Team as they race in front of a home crowd.
With the season heating up and crucial points on the line, Halifax provides a key moment in the series to build momentum. Expect the energy on shore to carry onto the water as fans rally behind the home team.
Beyond the racing, the Halifax waterfront comes alive with a festival atmosphere. The Race Stadium features big screens, live commentary, interactive experiences like the SailGP simulator, local food and beverages, plus official merchandise and live entertainment.
It’s more than a seat by the water – it’s a full weekend experience and one of the defining events to kick off a summer of festivals and events in Nova Scotia.
