Discover stunning, ever-changing sand dunes, hundreds of wild horses and the largest grey seal colony in the world, on this trip of a lifetime to Sable Island National Park Reserve!
Located 300km off the coast of Halifax, at the edge of the continental shelf is the renowned Sable Island. Home to over 500 wild horses and the largest grey seal colony in the world, the island’s wild and remote environment is like no other! Fly over the Atlantic Ocean by airplane with your Kattuk Expeditions guide. Landing on the beach, you’ll be welcomed by Parks Canada staff for a brief orientation before exploring with your guide. Hike along towering sand dunes to see the island’s wild horses, unique bird species, and grey seal colony. Following a delicious picnic lunch, featuring organic, locally-sourced ingredients, you’ll also have a chance to explore on your own. As the sun starts to set, photographers will be in awe by the rare opportunity to capture this magical place at sunset.
Experience Includes:
- Welcome orientation of Sable Island with Parks Canada staff
- 6-8 hours of guided walking and exploration with Kattuk Expeditions. All guides have Wilderness and Remote First Aid Certification
- Picnic lunch, prepared with organic, locally-sourced ingredients by your Kattuk Expeditions guide
- Return transportation to Halifax Stanfield International Airport with Sable Aviation (about 1.5 hours each way)
- Meet Zoe Lucas from the Sable Island Institute (when available). A portion of the experience cost will be donated to the Sable Island Institute.

Good to Know:
- Meet at Gateway Terminal, 645 Pratt and Whitney Drive, Goffs. Tour Time: 7:30am – 8:30pm.
- When booking this excursion, guests must also be available for the day following the tour date. This 2-day travel window is due to unpredictable island weather and landing conditions.
- Please expect cooler temperatures on the island. Dress in layers in comfortable, active clothing for the time of year and weather. Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots for walking in sand.
- Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and water bottle. There is potable water on the island to refill.
- Don’t forget your camera
- Unexpected island weather conditions may prevent the flight from departing. Though this is very rare, it may result in overnight costs for Parks Canada accommodations.
- There is no cell service on the island. Your guide will carry a VHF radio to communicate with the park’s main station staff. If guests choose to take time on their own at the end of the day, they will be required to carry a two-way UHF radio (provided) to communicate with their guide.
Conditions & cancellations: Advance booking required. Maximum group size of 7. A $500 deposit per person is due at time of booking. The remaining payment is due 90 days prior to the departure date. Cancellations made over 90 days prior will receive a full refund, less a 5% administrative fee. Cancellations made after 90 days will be charged the $500 deposit. Trips are non-refundable after 60 days prior to departure. Any trip cancelled by Kattuk Expeditions due to weather will be 100% refunded. Its recommended that all travellers purchase travel insurance that covers tour cancellations. Participants must be in great physical shape, as the experience includes a full day (up to 10km) of hiking in sand. If you are on any medications, it is advised that you bring at least one week’s supply with you (or more if it’s a serious condition), in the unlikely event we are unable to leave the island. Please notify your guide of any dietary restrictions at the time of booking. Full details and trip planning suggestions will be provided at the time of booking.
