Alan Syliboy Art Studio
Open year-round
Alan is the recipient of the 2024 Portia White Prize which “recognizes an outstanding professional Nova Scotian artist, who has attained mastery and recognition in their discipline and has made a significant contribution to the province’s cultural life over a sustained career.”
Born and raised in Millbrook First Nation, Alan Syliboy is a celebrated Mi’kmaw artist, author and musician. Alan attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and studied privately with the late Shirley Bear, Wolastoqey artist, activist and feminist.
Alan looks to the Indigenous Mi’kmaq petroglyph tradition for inspiration and has developed his own artistic vocabulary out of those forms. His popularization of these symbolic icons has conferred on them a mainstream legitimacy that restores community pride in its Mi’kmaq heritage. Alan still lives and works in Millbrook, and creates art in his studio which, opened on June 1, 2023.
