Overview

Visitors will find the site of the Icelandic settlement (1875–1882) in Markland, located between the villages of Caribou Gold Mines and Moose River Gold Mines in the Musquodoboit Valley area of Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore region.

Thirty two Icelandic families lived here in this little-known Icelandic community from 1875-1882. The memorial cairn at the entrance is built with stones from the old homesteads and topped with a rock that was shipped from Iceland. Historical plaques mark the foundations of many of the original settlers homesteads with interpretive signage and cleared walkways to the original foundations. A log cabin replica built on Lot 3 is where the first Icelandic child was born in Nova Scotia.

Guided tours by appointment are available. Bus tours are welcome.
