The Brixton
Open year-round
Established in 1967, the Cape Breton Miners Museum exists to deepen the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the events, experiences, and people who shaped Cape Breton’s mining industry. Inside, a fascinating exhibit area traces the timeline of coal mining and the techniques used throughout its history. Outdoors, visitors can explore the Miners’ Village, stepping back in time to a company store and home representing life from the 1850s to the early 1900s.
Guests can also venture underground into the Ocean Deeps Colliery, located beneath the museum grounds. Led by a retired coal miner, the tour explores a room and pillar mine from the 1920s. Before heading below, visitors can immerse themselves in our two-part virtual simulator, which presents three underground mine disasters and teaches the broader history of coal mining in Nova Scotia.
After touring our wheelchair accessible museum, visitors can explore the gift shop, which features Cape Breton inspired arts and crafts made by local creators. During the summer months, guests can also enjoy a performance by the world famous Men of the Deeps. For concert dates and details, please visit our website.
