Overview
Surrounded by rolling hills and dotted with islands, the Bras d’Or Lake UNESCO Biosphere Region is located in the heart of Unama’ki – Cape Breton Island. Its extensive watershed defines the biosphere’s boundary. The region is home to Mi’kmaw First Nations communities and descendants from early French, Scottish, and English settlers. The people maintain close ties to the culture of their ancestors and the land.
The Bras d’Or Lake, itself a unique estuary locally know as the inland sea, offers a unique blend of both fresh and salt water. The lake provides a great vantage point to view everything from the majestic bald eagle to curious grey seals. The biodiversity of the area doesn’t stop at the waters’ edge.
