Canoe St. Mary’s Eco & Art
Overview
Paddle and feel the river flow: On the St. Mary’s River, learn about the history of logging and salmon fishing and the current restoration efforts currently underway. Become a naturalist with artistic expressions and give back to this river valley.
Experience Includes
- This canoe trip will be relaxed and covers a route that is both beautiful and historic. Along the way, canoers will be occasionally gathered to learn about rivers and conservation, and the logging and salmon fishing history of river use on the St. Mary’s.
- There will also be two shore stops on our trip. The first will be a naturalist encounter with the river. We will use dip nets, take water temperatures, measure water speed, and make use of an underwater camera to see the river as fish do. We will also warm up with a hot lunch on the shore.
- Our second shore stop will be an encounter with the forest, focusing on what is under our feet and above our head. We will explore how trees communicate, discover the secret lives of mushrooms, look at wildlife camera footage (who goes there?), discuss keystone forest species, and discover how birds use forest valleys. We will also build some big-bird boxes and engage in a little art or writing.
- Your hosts, river guide Scott Beaver, and naturalist Dr. Stephen Flemming, will provide you with an experience you will always remember. Need to rent a canoe – we can help.
