Bedford Institute of Oceanography
Open year-round
The Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) is a modern oceanographic research facility, established in 1962 by the Federal Government of Canada, located on the shores of the Bedford Basin in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Over the last 50 years BIO has grown to become Canada’s largest centre for ocean research. The Institute performs targeted research to provide peer reviewed advice and support to government decision making on a broad range of ocean issues. The guided public tour at BIO introduces visitors to a brief history of the Institute and its current operations, provides content and displays including Species at Risk and marine protection, and features displays of life-sized sea turtles and sharks common to Atlantic Canada. There are also two touch tanks filled with a variety of sea life that can be found in the waters of the Bedford Basin.
