Le premier \u00e9tait Mathieu de Costa, explorateur et traducteur de Samuel de Champlain, qui a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9tablir des relations avec les Mi\u2019kmaqs au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1600. Par la suite, des colons noirs d\u2019origine anglaise et fran\u00e7aise se sont install\u00e9s dans des villes comme Annapolis Royal. Dans les d\u00e9cennies qui ont suivi, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 rejoints par les Marrons \u2014 un groupe d\u2019esclaves lib\u00e9r\u00e9s de la Jama\u00efque \u2014 ainsi que par d\u2019autres r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s de la guerre civile am\u00e9ricaine fuyant l\u2019esclavage en suivant le chemin de fer clandestin (Underground Railroad).<\/p>\n<p>De nombreux N\u00e9o-\u00c9cossais d\u2019origine africaine se sont install\u00e9s dans la communaut\u00e9 d\u2019Africville, en bordure du port d\u2019Halifax. La communaut\u00e9 a subsist\u00e9 pendant plus d\u2019un si\u00e8cle avant d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9log\u00e9e pour laisser place \u00e0 l\u2019expansion industrielle d\u2019Halifax, dans les ann\u00e9es 1960. M\u00eame si elle a disparu aujourd\u2019hui, son essence perdure. Il en est de m\u00eame pour les 51 autres communaut\u00e9s afro-n\u00e9o-\u00e9cossaises \u00e0 travers la province, qui continuent de prosp\u00e9rer gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur culture, leurs histoires et Birchtown, dans la r\u00e9gion de South Shore en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse, Black Loyalist Heritage Centre pr\u00e9sente l\u2019histoire des loyalistes noirs, des hommes et des femmes libres ayant combattu
