Everyone knows no visit to Nova Scotia is complete without a lobster dinner.

So, let’s explore all things lobster with 7 things you probably didn’t know about Nova Scotian lobster. We’re sure these tasty crustaceans will claw their way into your heart.

Lobster fishing occurs off the coast of Nova Scotia year-round and is readily available from local restaurants and retail food shops.

Did you know that the largest lobster ever recorded was caught in Nova Scotia in 1977 and weighed 44 pounds!

There are more than 25 restaurants on the Nova Scotia Lobster Trail that offer deliciously creative lobster dining experiences.

Take part in Living Wharves Fishing Experience in the Yarmouth & Acadian Shores region to speak to a fisherman or fisherwoman, see demonstrations and ask questions. Or, tour a working lobster pound such as the Halls Harbour Lobster Pound & Restaurant in Halls Harbour.  Did you know that it takes a lobster 6-8 years to reach market weight (approximately 1lb) and that they are capable of living up to 100 years?

Barrington, Nova Scotia is the Lobster Capital of Canada.

The lobster fishing grounds off Barrington’s shores are amongst the richest in the world and lobster has been the economic backbone of communities in this area since the 1800’s. They even build a Christmas tree out of lobster traps during the holidays.

There is an annual month-long lobster festival held on Nova Scotia’s South Shore.

Every February, this much-loved crustacean is celebrated during the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl. From a lobster roll contest to lobster-themed art shows, tours, and a craft beer festival, it’s easy to show off your love for lobster!
