Every year since 1971, Nova Scotia has donated a giant evergreen tree to the people of Boston as a thank you for their assistance following the Halifax Explosion. This year’s tree lighting takes place December 1, at 6:30 pm, on the Boston Common.
Halifax was the only city in North America to suffer damage in the First World War when on December 6, 1917, the munitions ship Mont Blanc, and the relief ship Imo, collided in Halifax Harbour causing the largest man-made explosion prior to Hiroshima. Halifax International Airport has been extended the pre-clearance program by the United States - this enables travelers to be treated as domestic passengers on arrival in the US where they can enjoy shorter and easier connections to other US cities. The airport’s new pre-clearance facility will be completed in 2006.
Improved signage, a visitor information centre, free internet access, private crew lounge and the World’s Largest Fiddle greet cruise ship passengers arriving in the Port of Sydney. The newly designed facility is primarily a Cruise Pavilion, but also serves as a venue for events and conferences.
