6th Clipper Round the World Yacht Race
They came, they were seen, and they definitely conquered. Ten yachts began the round the world odyssey from Liverpool, England on September 16, 2007 and returned triumphantly to that port on July 5, 2008.
During the ten-month journey, the crew of 400, representing 27 nationalities, raced between 14 ports
on five continents. Amazingly, up to 40% of these crewmembers had no previous sailing experience
prior
to signing up. Comprehensive clipper training —
overseen by Clipper Chairman and legendary solo sailor, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston — had them ready and eager by the time the race started.
A warm welcome was waiting for the clippers when they pulled into Nova Scotia’s seacoast cities of Halifax and Sydney in June, particularly local favourite, Clipper Nova Scotia.
In the end, Team New York triumphed overall in Liverpool, with an astounding 103.5 points at the finish line, followed closely by Hull & Humber and Glasgow, Scotland. Team Nova Scotia came in 9th overall.
All the thrills, adrenalin and excitement will return in two years for the 7th Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
