Earlier this fall, my fiancé and I brought my parents to Nova Scotia's Acadian Shores - Yarmouth and Acadian Shores touring region.
We spent an entire day visiting Clare - La Baie Sainte-Marie - where a friend guided us throughout the region and allowed us to discover some hidden gems of her hometown... the best ice cream parlour, Frenchy’s used clothing stores, even the local shipbuilding company and other lesser-known attractions. The day would not have been complete without visits to Saint Mary’s Church Museum, June Deveau Galerie Studio (2008 winner of Prix Grand-Pré) and Bangor Sawmill as well as a delicious meal of Paul Comeau’s rappie pie (râpure acadienne) and seafood lasagna at Chez Christophe and a stay at Louise Comeau’s Auberge Au Havre du Capitaine.
The following day, a stop in West Pubnico at Le Village historique acadien de la Nouvelle-Ecosse (Historical Acadian Village of Nova Scotia) allowed us to step back in time and discover life in an Acadian village in the late 1800s. The smell of pickling beets, the taste of freshly homemade molasses cookies, the costumed interpreters chatting with us about local customs, the salt haystacks in the marsh... What a treat for the senses! Despite the fact that all four of us are also Acadians, comparing our accents and our culinary, artistic, musical and historical customs with what we learned at the Village was a remarkable cultural experience.
